Only about a month left until the WWDC 2022 event will take place and here Apple will launch two versions of the new iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 operating systems.
There are still not many rumors or information about iOS 16 and the new iPadOS, but it is possible to predict which devices will support these two operating system versions. Along with that, Apple has also recently announced that it will stop producing the iPod Touch line, ending the attractive music players for a while.
Going back to the iOS and iPadOS operating systems, generations 13, 14 and 15 supported the same devices from iPhone 6S and up; iPod Touch 7th generation; iPad Air 2 with iPad 5th generation, iPad Mini 4 and first iPad Pro. This time Apple will probably remove the oldest models such as the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, the last iPod Touch and the iPad models mentioned above.
Maybe memory problems will be a factor in Apple’s decision to remove the device, in iOS 13 Apple removed models with less than 2GB of RAM, removing support for models running A7 and A8 chips like iPhone 5S , iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus; along with the 5th generation iPad Air, the iPad Mini 2 and 3, and the 6th generation iPod Touch. The iPad Mini 4 with 2GB of memory still supports iOS 13, 14, 15, and it’s even running the A8 chip.
It is predicted that devices that support iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 will probably need 3GB of RAM, so 9 devices with A9 and A10 Fusion chips can be eliminated. However, the 7th generation iPhone 7 Plus and iPad, although using the A10 Fusion chip, have 3GB of RAM, so they will probably still support it. There are some predictions that the company will still support the 7th generation iPod Touch even though they are using the A10 chip and have 2GB of memory because Apple is trying to sell off the rest.
The current iOS 16 support list is expected to look like this for iPhones:
